This was the first class where I really utilized technology in my learning. Creating a Personal Knowledge Base has been very beneficial in my organization in this class. After having a class with the PKB I can’t imagine a class without it. It was helpful when I needed to recall what I have previously read or topics that we have discussed in class. I can see myself expanding my PKB as I continue on my education.
This semester I have had a couple of challenges in my learning. For example, I struggle with keeping up to date with all of the different information I have in all of my classes. With taking five classes with all completely different set of notes I have trouble with keeping everything straight and organized. My most difficult class this semester is CMD 375, Language Development. It is so hard because it is a lecture of around 100 students. My professor stands in front of the class and reads off his word document to my class for an hour and fifteen minutes. I struggle with paying attention, especially when the class is not interactive or discussion based at all. But I have developed some learning strategies to be successful. I started to make notecards after every lecture to organize my thoughts. It is similar to my notes on Evernote but these are actual notecards I wrote with a pen. This helped me reinforce everything that I just learned in class as well as help me study for exams. I have notecards I can read over to study for tests. I am currently in this difficult class but I believe I found some strategies in order to be successful in the course.
I have used Evernote and the Webclipper a lot in ECD 102H. In the majority of classes I would take notes on Evernote just incase I needed to refer back to what we were learning at any point. I also think that will be beneficial when I take the final. Having some discussion points that we went over in class will help me when writing our final paper. Also, in the three novels that we read throughout the class I took notes on Evernote. It was super easy to access these notes when we had discussions in class about the night before’s homework reading. Also, whenever we were given handouts in class I would take pictures and upload it to my Evernote notebook. Finally, if in class we talked about a website I could clip it to my notebook. Having all of these different ways to take notes has kept my very organized throughout the class. I feel confident with the way I used Evernote in this class and I hope to continue using it in other classes and throughout my education.
Viewing my notes on Evernote as a lasting resource will affect how I participate in my future classes. It is very convenient to have all of my notes on my laptop. Instead of having a notebook and binder for each class it would make it much easier to have everything in one place. Also, after this semester I am going to be taking more classes for my major and a lot of the information will be overlapping. It will be better to not have to write information down twice in two different places. Having the PKB I will be able to copy and paste information that may overlap in my classes. I can also have different notebooks for different classes all through my Evernote account. This can keep me organized. By having everything on my laptop, I can easily take notes in lectures as well as discussion classes. Evernote is applicable to any class; it can be used in all of my classes and will keep me organized in order to be the most successful student I can be.
My Personal Knowledge Base in my EDC 102H class has definitely benefitted me. It not only helped me in this one class but it will help me in future classes. It has kept my fairly organized and kept all of my information in one place. Knowing how to use Evernote and keeping a PKB will further help me be organized in future classes. I am very happy that I received the opportunity to have had a class that was focused on technology. I now know how I can relate technology to my education and with that I know I will be a more successful student.
